Vertical farming is an established technology which has proved to enable the highly sustainable culture of plants. Cultipharm, an Italy-based startup, has taken this approach to the next level. Employing their protected Phytotron technology, a closed and self-sufficient culture system, Cultipharm can grow demanding, even endangered species in a way that certain botanical actives are expressed at maximum levels. This allows to specifically meet the personal care industry’s needs, while respecting the natural essence of the plant. In some cases, Cultipharm may even help recover endangered species by bringing plants back into their natural habitat and preserving them for the future.
“With their profound market knowledge and close cooperation with the relevant customers, LEHVOSS Personal Care is the ideal partner for us to make sure we develop the most exciting actives for the cosmetic industry.”, says Alessandro Algeri, CEO of Cultipharm. “We have already learnt so much from each other and we are very much looking forward to jointly developing more special and highly active substances.”
“Together, we will write novel stories for the personal care industry.”, says Fabio Angeleri, Head of Technical Department at LEHVOSS Personal Care. “There are so many plants out there that are known to have an incredible profile of biologically active substances.”, Mélanie Paquet, Product Manager at LEHVOSS, adds. “With Cultipharm’s technology, we can now for the first time culture even such plants that are very demanding or were not accessible so far. I am truly excited to leverage nature’s treasures in such a responsible and sustainable way.”
In 2024, Cultipharm and LEHVOSS Personal Care already launched VIRIVEA® Holyveda VF, an active isolated from Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) with stress-relieving and revitalizing effects, and VIRIVEA® Insularia VF, isolated from Pink Rockrose (Cistus incanus) with DNA protective and dark spots reducing effects. The latest VIRIVEA® superactive from Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) will be launched at in-cosmetics 2025. This product not only contains a very high amount of active, but it is also produced without the use of any Edelweiss growing in the wild, respecting the endangered status of this plant that falls into the nature conservation category.
